Sustainability and eco-friendly practices are equally vital when considering our impact on future generations. Without sustainable habits, our planet will suffer, resources will become scarce, and future generations will face significant challenges.
Since our founding, MarPoint has focused on sustainability. We committed to carefully sorting disposable items into recyclable and non-recyclable categories. Given the complexity and variety of components we use to assemble our products, which are delivered globally, this wasn’t easy.
However, we soon recognized that our recycling efforts still led to significant waste and inefficiencies. So, we challenged ourselves to rethink our approach: How could we reduce waste further, reuse materials effectively, and minimize our environmental footprint?
Reducing Our Ecological Footprint
Our first step was to document every disposed item, understand its original purpose, and creatively identify new ways to reuse or repurpose these materials. We prioritized methods that required minimal energy use. Finally, we established a clear process to responsibly discard what couldn’t be reused without creating additional environmental strain.
Innovative Packaging Solutions
To maximize efficiency, we standardized the packaging across all our products. Our goal was to design packaging that could easily be handled by a single person, reducing the need for mechanical or electrical assistance.
Furthermore, we optimized our delivery processes by carefully monitoring the available space in transportation vans and cargo trucks. We strategically designed packaging to eliminate empty spaces, clearly labeling each box with dimensions and weight. This effort reduced fuel consumption and delivery time, making our distribution more sustainable.
Resource Conservation & Waste Reduction
We took further measures to conserve resources by reusing protective materials from supplier shipments, significantly reducing plastic and paper waste each year. Boxes and protective materials that met our standards were set aside for reuse.
Additionally, we found practical uses for commonly overlooked items:
- Zip-lock bags: Instead of stretch films or duct tape, we reuse zip-lock bags in various sizes, including organizing and protecting documents.
- Polystyrene protection: Retained for packing sensitive equipment safely.
- Rubber bands: Collected and reused instead of relying heavily on packing tape.
- Plastic twist ties: Favored over single-use tie-wraps for cable management, given their reusability and easy adjustments.
- Box dimensions: Boxes not matching standard sizes were creatively modified to protect fragile items.
- Serial number stickers: Retained in zip-lock bags to avoid unnecessary paper and ink usage.
Optimizing Equipment for Efficiency
We also optimized Rack equipment placement for improved airflow, leading to better temperature management. This practice allowed us to reduce energy usage from cooling systems, contributing to overall sustainability.
Measuring Success
Ultimately, the effectiveness of sustainability efforts can only be measured by tangible outcomes. At MarPoint, we closely track the waste generated and the time and energy required to manage it. By standardizing our green strategy, we continuously discover new ways to reduce waste and operate more sustainably, demonstrating how many small improvements can create substantial change.
